Position Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and proactive Backhaul Coordinator to support our dedicated contract transportation operation. This position is responsible for identifying, coordinating, and scheduling backhaul opportunities that maximize fleet utilization, reduce empty miles, and support overall transportation cost and revenue objectives.

The Backhaul Coordinator will work closely with dispatch, operations, customers, brokers, drivers, and other transportation partners to identify available freight, coordinate pickups and deliveries, track loads through completion, and ensure backhaul activity aligns with operational requirements and customer commitments.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of transportation operations, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple loads and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Functions

  • Identify and secure backhaul opportunities that align with available equipment, driver capacity, routes, schedules, and operational requirements.

  • Coordinate and schedule backhaul pickups and deliveries to maximize equipment utilization and minimize empty or non-revenue miles.

  • Communicate regularly with freight brokers, customers, carriers, vendors, and internal operations personnel regarding load availability, scheduling, pickup requirements, delivery expectations, and changes.

  • Work closely with dispatch to match available backhaul freight with drivers, tractors, trailers, routes, and hours-of-service availability.

  • Monitor and track backhaul loads from initial scheduling through pickup and final delivery.

  • Proactively identify and communicate potential service issues, delays, scheduling conflicts, or changes that could impact customers or operations.

  • Maintain accurate records of backhaul loads, rates, mileage, pickup and delivery information, customer/broker communications, and supporting documentation.

  • Assist with rate confirmation, load documentation, proof-of-delivery requirements, and other paperwork necessary for timely billing.

  • Evaluate backhaul opportunities based on revenue potential, mileage, timing, equipment requirements, operational feasibility, and impact on dedicated customer commitments.

  • Support efforts to reduce empty miles and improve fleet productivity, asset utilization, and transportation cost efficiency.

  • Track backhaul activity and assist management with reporting on revenue, empty-mile reduction, load volume, utilization, and other key performance indicators.

  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with brokers and customers to create consistent and repeatable backhaul opportunities.

  • Coordinate with operations to ensure backhaul activity does not negatively impact dedicated customer service requirements or scheduled outbound operations.

  • Assist in resolving freight discrepancies, missed pickups, delivery issues, detention, accessorial charges, and other load-related concerns.

  • Monitor market conditions and available freight to identify opportunities that improve network efficiency and profitability.

  • Maintain accurate information within applicable transportation management, dispatch, and customer systems.

  • Perform other transportation and operational duties as assigned.

Pay Range: 58000.00-63000.00 per_year, General Benefits: Benefits

Backhaul Coordinator Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in transportation, logistics, supply chain, business, or a related field preferred.

  • 2+ years of experience in transportation, dispatch, freight coordination, logistics, brokerage, or a related environment preferred.

  • Experience working within a dedicated contract transportation or private fleet environment is highly desirable.

  • Working knowledge of truckload transportation, freight brokerage, dispatch operations, and load planning.

  • Understanding of DOT hours-of-service requirements and their impact on load planning and driver availability preferred.

  • Ability to evaluate freight opportunities based on mileage, timing, revenue, equipment availability, and operational requirements.

  • Strong communication and relationship-management skills with the ability to interact professionally with brokers, customers, drivers, dispatchers, and operations leadership.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple loads, deadlines, and changing priorities simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to service or scheduling issues.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and transportation management or dispatch systems.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate load and operational records.
